Massachusetts is one of the few American states whose capitol is located in its largest, main city.

The capitol of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on Beacon Hill, designed by architect Charles Bulfinch was first completed in 1798 at 24 Beacon Street. A major expansion of the original building occured in 1898, and the east and west wings were added in 1917.
