The bottom part of the sculpture has drapery carved out of marble, so perfectly sculpted that you could almost believe it to be fabric. A gigantic skeleton is coming out from under the funeral draping, brandishing an hourglass to show that his time has come. Death is shown with a covered face because it comes to all men, even the Supreme Pontiff
