Tower of London was founded by William the Conqueror and enlarged by successive sovereigns. During its 900-year history, it has been a royal palace and fortress, prison and place of execution, mint, arsenal, menagerie and jewel house.

The British Crown Jewels have been on public display since the 17th century in the Tower of London. The collection is now exhibited in the Waterloo Barracks, above.
