Before 1788 Federal Street was known as Long Lane, and was renamed after state leaders met there to determine Massachusetts’ ratification of the United States Constitution.

The American flag waving in front of the 21-story United Shoe Machinery Corporation Building at 75 Federal Street. The building, considered one of the best examples of Art Deco architecture in Boston, was designed by architect Thomas James and built in 1929. Behind is the 37-floor First National Bank of Boston Building at 100 Federal Street, Boston’s sixth-tallest building, completed in 1971.
