Slated for destruction in 1969 because of the structure’ dilapidated condition, Lucy the Elephant was rebuilt, renovated and reopened to the public in 1978.  

Lucy the Elephant, at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Decatur Street, was built in 1882 out of wood and tin, and weighs 90 tons.
