In 1357 Étienne Marcel led a reform movement that tried to institute a controlled French monarchy, confronting the royal power of the Dauphin or heir to the throne.

The bronze statue of Étienne Marcel by sculptor Antonin Idrac next to l’Hôtel de Ville de Paris. Marcel was provost of the merchants of Paris in the reign of King Jean le Bon, from 1354 to 1358. In the background is l’église Saint-Gervais.
