In June 1990 a French court ruled that the special lighting display installed for the tower’s 100th anniversary was an “original visual creation” protected by copyright.  

On the occasion of the Millennium Celebrations flashing lights were installed on the Eiffel Tower. Since then, the light show is a nightly event, and the 20,000 flash bulbs give the tower a sparkly appearance every hour on the hour.
