The city of Paris wanted to give the statue to the city of Metz in 1973, however the city government of Metz refused to pay the moving expenses, so the sculpture remained where it is.

A sunset behind the equestrian statue of Charlemagne and his Leudes in place Jean-Paul II on île de la Cité. A plaster model of the bronze sculpture was presented by Louis Rochet (1813–1878) in 1867 at the Universal Exposition, and was finally set on its marble base in front of Notre-Dame in 1895.
