After locking the padlock they toss the key in to the Seine, after not having used it once perhaps. The fad has spread to two other bridges, the pont de l’Archevêché, and Passerelle Lépold-Sédar Senghor.

Padlocks attached to the fence on the east side of Passerelle des Arts with île de la Cité behind. Since the middle of 2008, couples have been placing locks with their names and the date on the fence as an expression of their love. On May 12th 2010, most of the padlocks mysteriously disappeared, a few months later, there are thousands of locks once again.
