Padlocks attached to the fence on the east side of pont des Arts.

Padlocks attached to the fence on the east side of Passerelle des Arts with île de la Cité behind. Since the middle of 2008, couples have been placing locks with their names and the date on the fence as an expression of their love. I took these pictures of the padlocks in August 2010, when the phenomenon was cute and charming. In 2012 the trend hit such a fever pitch that one could not see at all through the fences anymore. To the right is a warning from the Parisian police stating that those who put a padlock on the pont des Arts run the risk of receiving a fine of 20 euros, posted on August 23rd 2013. No Love Locks is a web site campaigning to remove the locks and preserve bridges in Paris.
