Tracing its origins to the Royal Garden of Medicianal plants, inaugurated in 1626 under the reign of Louis the 13th, the Jardin des Plantes was opened to the public en 1640.

The Serre Australienne in the Jardin des Plantes, an early example of metal architecture in France, finished in 1836, features banana plants, ficus, cycas, pandanus, orchids and ferns.
