The speaker’s desk is decorated with allegories carved in marble. Between the two figures is a pedestal with the head of Janus, a symbole of respect for the past, and trust in the future.

The Hémicycle, main meeting room for legislators at the Assemblée Nationale, was inaugurated November 17th, 1797. The chamber in its current state was finished in 1832.
