The church and its construction were all part of urban planning that includes the Petit and Grand palais by Jacques-Ange Gabriel, and place de la Concorde, on the right bank, and the palais Bourbon, on the left bank.
 

The construction of l’église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine took place as Paris expanded west into faubourg Saint-Honoré in the second half of the 18th century.
