This entrance passage way was built in order to facilitate the flow of goods and people in and out of the courtyard of Napoléon III’s palace.

Hector Lefuel constructed the «guichets» on the Louvre’s façade facing the river Seine, leading into place du Carrousel between 1861 and 1870.
