The line was laid out in 1743 by the astronomist Charles Le Monnier, following on the work of Henri de Sully.

A spot of sunlight projected from a hole in one of the church windows fell on this plaque in église Saint-Sulpice on summer solstice. The meridional line, otherwise known as Paris’ “Rose Line”, embedded in the marble floor, is made out of brass and is an eighth of an inch wide. It leads from this point to the astronomical gnomon obelisk.
