The series of nine locks allows the canal waterway a descent of 82.5 feet between place de Stalingrad and the River Seine, a distance of about three miles.

Canal Saint-Martin seen from rue Louis Blanc, looking north towards place de Stalingrad. On the left is quai de Valmy, in the middle are the écluses des Morts (Locks of the Dead), and on the right is quai de Jemmappes.
