Commissioned by François Mitterrand, the glass pyramid was designed by Chinese-born American architect I.M. Pei, and completed in 1989.

The Louvre museum’s main entrance was built as part of the bicentennial celebrations of 1989. It is likely the glass pyramid was inspired by the proposal of building a baroque pyramid for the centennial celebrations of the 1789 French Revolution.
