Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure was designed by architect Léon Vaudoyer in the Byzantine and Roman Revival styles, its foundation stone was laid by Emperor Napoleon III in 1852. Protests while the previous version of the church was being torn down stopped its demolition, leaving the choir and a row of chapels standing next to the current edifice.
